The First Year of Rise Above - The Data Tells a Story
340 enrollments.
1,515 visits.
317 overdoses reversed.
570 naloxone doses used.
390 referrals.
145 participants linked to care.
8% of participants linked to treatment.
8 lives lost.
These stark numbers tell a story of struggle and resilience, of loss and hope. They represent a year's worth of work at Rise Above, the harm reduction program launched in January 2024.
Harm reduction is a challenging field. It confronts the harsh realities of addiction, the weight of stigma, and the constant presence of death. Yet, it also reveals the incredible strength of the human spirit, the power of compassion, and the unwavering dedication of those who refuse to let others fall through the cracks.
The Rise Above team is deeply grateful for the support of our community, for the countless individuals who contribute daily to this vital work. The NRHD medical director's tireless advocacy and the outreach staff's unwavering commitment are the backbone of Rise Above. They are the boots on the ground, meeting people where they are, offering a hand up, and reminding them that they are not alone.
And in the midst of this important hopeful work, there is still grief and loss. Eight lives lost. Each one a tragedy, a reminder of the work still to be done. And in that vein of continued effort, we celebrate the 317 overdoses that were reversed. Each one a victory, a testament to the impact of harm reduction.
We remember those we have lost, and we honor them by continuing the fight. We celebrate the lives saved and the connections made. And we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to those who need it most.
Looking ahead, the launch of the New River Valley Peer Coalition will support a network of Peer Specialists and allies in advocacy, training, and resources - allowing for the further expansion of reach and impact. Shared experiences uniquely position peers to provide hope and healing - leading to transformational efforts in harm reduction. If you or someone you know is in need of support and harm reduction resources, you can find more information on how to connect on the Rise Above Facebook page.
