Tailgating: Try it the S.M.A.R.T. Way!
Virginia Tech football kicks off tonight as the Hokies take on VMI, and the tailgaters are rolling in! Football season is always a great time, it brings friends, family, and fans together to celebrate their team, eat good food, and make memories. It’s time to break out the grill and bring on the hamburgers, hot dogs, wings, and all your favorite game-day foods. But a tailgate is only truly fun when it’s safe for you and the people around you. As you get ready for game day, be SMART: stay hydrated, mocktails make it fun, appoint a designated driver, remember to eat, and take responsibility if you choose to drink. A little planning goes a long way toward making sure everyone enjoys the tailgate, the game, and the celebration.
S- Stay Hydrated
Keep water and other non-alcoholic drinks on hand. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
M- Mocktails Make It Fun
You don't need alcohol to have a great time! Mocktails can be just as festive and fun as cocktails, and everyone can enjoy them.
A- Appoint a Designated Driver
Plan ahead and choose a designated driver before the tailgate begins. Even better, make sure there are plenty of alcohol-free options for the person who is driving. Options also include the BT, Uber, and Lyft!
R- Remember to Eat
Don't tailgate on an empty stomach. Enjoy good food throughout the day, and pair your drinks with a meal or snacks.
T- Take Responsibility & Drink Responsibly
Know your limits, pace yourself, and look out for your friends. Never drink and drive, and help make sure everyone gets home safely.
Tonight the sound of “Enter Sandman” will be rocking downtown Blacksburg as thousands of fans jump, cheer, and send energy through Lane Stadium. Remember that game day is only fun when everyone can enjoy it safely. So this football season, be SMART and look out for your friends and family.
