Peer Network Growing in the New River Valley
Peer Coalition meeting at NRCC
Peers have a unique strength of shared lived experiences that position them to lead transformational efforts in substance use and mental health recovery. The New River Valley Peer Coalition is a network of Peer Specialists and allies striving to foster hope and healing in the region. The coalition will expand on these strengths by offering a collaborative space that fosters two main principles: relationships and development.
The coalition is also a space for peers to find healing in this difficult work. It provides a supportive environment where members can connect with others who understand their experiences and find camaraderie. This community makes the coalition a vital and valuable resource for the New River Valley.
Building strong relationships is at the heart of the peer coalition, and the foundation of recovery in the region. Through regular meetings, networking opportunities, and collaborative projects, members can share insight, resources, and encouragement in a safe space. Connections break down stigma and empower us to speak up.
Professional and personal development are key components of the coalition’s mission. Through training sessions and mentorship opportunities, the coalition empowers peers to not only advance their recovery but also build successful career paths. By offering certification resources, leadership development, and continuing education, the coalition ensures peers have the tools they need for long-term success—whether in a traditional peer role or beyond. The peer advocate role holds immense value in any workplace, fostering a more supportive and inclusive environment. So many are on their own recovery journeys, or have loved ones who are. Peers contribute immeasurable value to every space, creating a true “recovery ecosystem” within the New River Valley.
By supporting individuals on their recovery journeys and fostering community collaboration, the coalition is committed to ensuring that peers and allies have the tools and connections they need to thrive.
The next meeting will be Monday, March 24, 2025 at New River Community College.
